St. Louis helps Lightning beat Jets

Jan 8, 2014 - 5:59 AM Winnipeg, MB (SportsNetwork.com) - Martin St. Louis tallied two goals in the third period as the Tampa Bay Lightning defeated the Winnipeg Jets, 4-2, at MTS Centre.

Ondrej Palat and Valtteri Filppula lit the lamp, while Teddy Purcell and Alex Killorn both had two assists as the Lightning have won three of their last four. Anders Lindback made 12 saves in the win.

"This is a tough place to play on the road, and I thought we just played an outstanding road game," said Lightning coach Jon Cooper.

Dustin Byfuglien had a goal and an assist and Olli Jokinen supplied Winnipeg's other goal. Ondrej Pavelec allowed three goals on 32 shots in the Jets' fourth straight loss.

"This game was a very poorly played, poorly executed game. I don't know that we got anything out of that that was positive. It was really disappointing," said Jets coach Claude Noel.

In a 2-2 contest, Bolts forward Nate Thompson got drilled from behind and Michael Frolik went off for boarding at 7:48 of the third period.

The Lightning converted less than a minute into the advantage. Pavelec could not control a rebound and the puck made its way to Victor Hedman, who slapped a shot on net. St. Louis was present in front to redirect the puck home at 8:39.

Winnipeg's net wasn't vacated until late in regulation, and St. Louis ensured the victory with an empty-net goal at 19:33.

Filppula cut to the middle and wristed a shot to get the Lightning on the board 80 seconds after the initial drop of the puck.

Winnipeg was awarded a 5-on-3 after Filppula went off for slashing and Lindback shuttled the puck over the glass within a 13-second span. Mark Scheifele found Jokinen to the right of Linback where he tied the game 1-1 with 3:17 left in the first.

Byfuglien broke the tie on another advantage with his 10th of the season. The burly blueliner skated up to the right circle and wristed a shot past Lindback to give the Jets a 2-1 lead 4:45 into the second.

The Lightning drew even at 15:37 of the second thanks to slick passing. Killorn found Nikita Kucherov in the slot, and he dished over to Palat at the right circle who recorded his eighth of the year.
