Niederreiter leads Wild to SO win in LA

Jan 8, 2014 - 7:01 AM Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Nino Niederreiter scored the game-tying goal before tallying the game-winner in the shootout to lead the Minnesota Wild to 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings.

After the first seven shooters were unable to find the back of the net, Niederreiter skated in, faked a shot then pulled back and beat Jonathan Quick for the game-winner.

"There was a while there where our execution wasn't there, we were turning pucks over left and right and really making things very difficult on ourselves," said Wild coach Mike Yeo. "Right from the start Nino stepped up, and that's a statement for those kids to come out and play like that. It's a good statement for the rest of the team that our young players can come in and play like that."

Jason Pominville and Mikael Granlund both had an assist and Darcy Kuemper made 39 saves in the win, Minnesota's third straight.

Jarret Stoll had the lone tally for the Kings, losers in six of their last seven games. Quick made 16 saves in the setback.

"You can't always expect the big guys to score all of the time. We need to get more secondary scoring, and more opportunities from our defense," said Kings coach Darryl Sutter.

After going the first 40 minutes without a goal, Stoll was able to find the net 50 seconds into the final frame. Stoll took the puck at the point and skated down to the right circle before tangling the disc and firing a wrister past Kuemper for the score.

Niederreiter scored at the 3:25 mark to knot things up at 1-1 after tipping-in a Pominville pass.
