Blue Jackets roll over slumping Jets

Jan 12, 2014 - 6:28 AM Winnipeg, MB (SportsNetwork.com) - Boone Jenner and Mark Letestu both lit the lamp twice as the Columbus Blue Jackets defeated the Winnipeg Jets, 6-3, at MTS Centre.

Cam Atkinson and Nick Foligno supplied the other two Columbus goals. James Wisniewski and Derek Mackenzie both tallied two assists as the Blue Jackets won their third straight.

Columbus netminder Curtis McElhinney turned aside 28 shots in the win.

Bryan Little had a goal and an assist, while Tobias Enstrom and Eric O'Dell scored the other Winnipeg goals. Ondrej Pavelec allowed all six goals on 26 shots in the Jets' fifth straight loss.

A little over a minute after a Winnipeg goal was disallowed due to a high- stick, the Jets got on the board first. McElhinney slid past a puck that was shot off the boards by Adam Pardy and O'Dell was in the crease to backhand it into an open net for his first career goal 4:32 into the first period.

Columbus tied the game 36 seconds into the second while shorthanded. Letestu took a pass from Mackenzie on his forehand and moved to his backhand, faking out Pavelec before sliding the puck into the net.

"The first period wasn't the way we wanted to start, but we responded well. McElhinney was making good saves. That shorthanded goal at the start of the second period was big," Jenner said.

Atkinson scored on a tic-tac-toe passing play shortly afterward to put the Blue Jackets in front. He entered the zone and dropped a pass to Ryan Murray, who then slid the puck over to Wisniewski. Atkinson received the puck from Wisniewski and quickly wristed a shot into the wide-open net 4:15 into the second.

Columbus' Ryan Johansen sent the puck to the front of the net from the right corner and Foligno redirected it past McElhinney to make it 3-1 at 8:26 of the second. Jenner was taken down by Pardy 41 seconds later while on a breakaway and was awarded a penalty shot. He skated up the right side and slapped a low shot past Pavelec to make it a 4-1 game.

Enstrom slapped a shot past a screened McElhinney to get the Jets within two with close to eight minutes remaining in the second.

Jenner scored his second of the night after wristing a rebound over the shoulder of Pavelec 4:08 into the third, putting the Blue Jackets up 5-2.

Winnipeg got one back on the power play. Andrew Ladd dove in front of McElhinney to set a screen and Little corralled a rebound and proceeded to lift a backhand for his 15th of the season less than two minutes after Jenner scored.

Letestu's second of the night with 8:46 left in the third accounted for the final score.

"If you look at some of the goals they're just breakdowns. Half the goals probably shouldn't have even had a chance and you have some empty-netters. Just kind of a mistake-filled game," said Little.
