Subban's goal pushes Habs past Sens in OT
Jan 17, 2014 - 6:24 AM Ottawa, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - P.K. Subban's goal 23 seconds into overtime lifted the Montreal Canadiens to a 5-4 win over the Ottawa Senators. The hard work by Montreal captain Brian Gionta on the forecheck in the Ottawa zone forced a turnover in overtime. Subban picked up the puck and fired a shot from the right circle that squeaked through Senators goalie Craig Anderson and trickled across the goal line.
Tomas Plekanec had two goals and Carey Price made 40 saves for Montreal, which has alternated wins and losses in its last seven games.
"I'm just trying to do my job and give us an opportunity and we took that opportunity and made the best of it," Price said.
Erik Karlsson registered a goal and two assists for the Senators.
Ottawa had won four straight at home and was back at Canadian Tire Centre after a 3-0-1 road trip.
Anderson surrendered all five goals on just 23 shots.
However, he wasn't at fault on the game-tying marker. Plekanec was denied by Anderson on a second breakaway opportunity, but a backchecking Jared Cowen inadvertently directed the rebound with his right skate into the Ottawa net and the own goal knotted the score at 4-4 with 8:58 remaining in the third period.
"I thought we played the third period a little timid again and didn't establish our game and establish a forecheck," said Ottawa head coach Paul MacLean.
The Senators heavily outshot (19-7) the Canadiens in the first period, but fell behind 3-0 before countering late with two goals in a 1:12 span.
Plekanec beat Anderson on a short-handed breakaway 2:04 into the contest, then an ailing Montreal power play ended its drought. Max Pacioretty was positioned just inside the left circle near the slot and one-timed home David Desharnais' pass with 5:55 remaining.
The Canadiens were 0-for-17 on the power play over their last five games.
A little over a minute later, Desharnais was allowed to lug the puck into the crease area after collecting a return feed from Brendan Gallagher, deked the Ottawa goalie by pulling the puck to the forehand and placed it into an open net.
The Senators were able to pull within a goal thanks to Karlsson. The talented defenseman set up Clarke MacArthur for a deflection in the high slot at 17:13 before driving to the right post and firing home Jason Spezza's diagonal pass from the left point at 18:25.
Price was peppered with 19 more shots in the second period and made a handful of spectacular saves, but Ottawa was able to slip two past him and take a 4-3 lead.
Bobby Ryan and Kyle Turris lit the lamp 1:24 apart late in the frame. Ryan scored on a snap shot from the faceoff dot in the right circle at 17:16, then Turris beat Price on a backhander after working a give-and-go with MacArthur.
Game Notes
Turris has scored in four straight games, while MacArthur has six goals in his past seven games ... Ottawa had won the first two meetings with the Canadiens this season ... Only two penalties were called in the game, one on each team.
