Final
Vermette, Coyotes blank Canucks
Jan 17, 2014 - 6:23 AM Glendale, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Antoine Vermette's goal in the first period was the only one of the game and enough for the Phoenix Coyotes to take a 1-0 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday.Mike Smith stopped 28 shots for his first shutout of the season for the Coyotes, who snapped a four-game losing streak.
"I just wanted to make some saves and give the team a chance to win, the shutout is just a bonus," said Smith. "The guys were tremendous tonight and everyone got a confidence boost from it."
Eddie Lack turned away 22-of-23 shots for the Canucks, who were coming off a 9-1 loss to Anaheim on Wednesday and have now dropped eight of their last nine.
"It's a team that is having a hell of a time making an offensive play," said Vancouver head coach John Tortorella. "It's a game of those little details and things just aren't working."
The only goal of the game came at 12:51 of the first on the power play, as Keith Yandle sent a pass from the high slot to the low right side where Vermette snuck it in for his 13th of the season.
Phoenix's penalty kill had a large role in winning this game, keeping Vancouver off the board on all seven of its chances, including a high sticking double minor to Martin Hanzal with 4:05 to play in the third.
Vancouver pulled Lack for an extra attacker, but was unable to get one in as the team has now scored just three goals in its last four games.
