Isles, Flyers cap home-and-home on Long Island

Jan 20, 2014 - 3:45 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Islanders will try to rebound from a tough loss when they host the Philadelphia Flyers in the finale of a home-and-home series on Monday afternoon.

The Islanders lost for the second time in three games on Saturday, dropping a 6-4 decision in Philadelphia despite holding leads of 2-0 and 4-3 in a wild tilt at the Wells Fargo Center.

Flyers captain Claude Giroux assisted on the tying and go-ahead scores in the third period from linemates Jakub Voracek and Michael Raffl to help Philadelphia pull off the comeback win over its Metropolitan Division rivals.

Andrej Meszaros tallied twice in the first period, while Adam Hall and Matt Read also lit the lamp for the Flyers, who have made a habit of coming back in recent months and tied a team record by erasing a third-period deficit for the ninth time this season.

The Islanders carried a 4-3 lead into the final period after receiving goals from John Tavares, Cal Clutterbuck, Brock Nelson and Brian Strait. Kevin Poulin gave up five goals on 31 shots in defeat.

"It gives you that motivation that hey, we have two days to make up for this game," said Isles defenseman Andrew MacDonald. "It's unacceptable the way we lost this, but moving forward, Monday's a chance at redemption. We have to come out hard."

The loss came at the end of a six-game road trip, but New York still posted a solid 4-2-0 record on the swing. The Isles hope to rebound in today's matinee, although the club is just 7-9-7 at Nassau Coliseum.

Hours after signing a three-year, $12.3 million extension, Flyers goaltender Steve Mason was pulled after allowing four goals on 24 shots in less than two periods, but Flyers head coach Craig Berube placed the blame for Mason's poor outing on the team's defense.

"I thought they picked their game up. We played a real good third period but the first two periods are inexcusable," said Berube. "Mason was a victim of the team's poor play."

Ray Emery replaced Mason on Saturday and picked up the win with five saves the rest of the way.

The Flyers improved to 17-1-2 at home against the Islanders since the start of the 2007-08 season and Philly has won four straight, seven of nine and 15 of the last 19 games in this series overall.

Philadelphia, which is 12-11-4 on the road this season, has won eight of nine and 15 of its last 17 games on Long Island.
