Bruins slip by Kings thanks to pair from Marchand
Jan 21, 2014 - 1:34 AM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Brad Marchand tallied twice, including the game winner early in the third period, as Boston edged Los Angeles, 3-2, at TD Garden.Chad Johnson came up with 21 saves and Torey Krug added the other score for the Bruins, who bounced back from Sunday's 3-2 shootout loss in Chicago.
"I'm pretty impressed with our team and how we've handled ourselves," said Bruins head coach Claude Julien about his club picking up three points in games against the two clubs who contested the Western Conference final last season.
Willie Mitchell and Jeff Carter provided offense for the Kings, who have dropped back-to-back road contests and fell to 1-1-1 on their current five- game trip.
Jonathan Quick stopped 20 shots in defeat, hours after being named one of the league's Three Stars for last week.
Carter tied the score with a one-timer from the left circle on the back half of a hooking minor to Johnny Boychuk for a 2-2 game at 8:35 of the third.
Only 18 seconds later, Marchand put his team on top for good, finishing off a passing play between Patrice Bergeron and Reilly Smith with a successful try from the right circle.
Quick was pulled for an extra skater with more than a minute to play, but his club derailed a comeback effort when Jake Muzzin was sent off for tripping with 45 seconds to go.
"It wasn't his fault," Kings center Anze Kopitar said of Quick. "I mean, we gave up a short-handed goal and gave up a power-play goal. I don't think there was any connection to Quick back there."
Marchand gave the hosts a lead while shorthanded with 12:07 played in the first. He weaved through Kings defenseman Drew Doughty up the middle and flipped a shot which Quick turned aside, but Marchand recovered, deked another defender and scored through the five hole.
Krug ripped a shot off the far post from the left circle and Boston led 2-0 on a power-play marker occurring with 2:09 left before intermission.
Mitchell halved his club's deficit on a redirection of Mike Richards' feed into the slot at 4:09 of the second period.
