Blues slide out of Detroit with key road victory

Jan 21, 2014 - 5:35 AM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Jaroslav Halak stopped 22 shots to help the St. Louis Blues take a 4-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Monday.

Barret Jackman, Jay Bouwmeester, Kevin Shattenkirk and Magnus Paajarvi all scored for the Blues, who had lost three of four coming into the game.

"The first two periods we played the way we had to," said St. Louis head coach Ken Hitchcock. "We kept the puck in their zone a lot and got a high volume of shots on net."

Gustav Nyquist scored the only goal of the game for the Red Wings, who have dropped three of their last four.

Jimmy Howard started the game in net for Detroit but left halfway through the second period with an undisclosed illness. He had allowed three goals on 25 shots. Petr Mrazek took over and gave up a goal on 14 shots.

"They were better in all areas of the game tonight," said Detroit head coach Mike Babcock. "But I don't want the guys focusing on this because our game lately has been very good."

St. Louis took a 1-0 lead at 11:13 of the first period as Paajarvi wrapped the puck around from behind the net and it hit off the right leg of Howard and went in.

Detroit tied the game with 27 seconds left in the opening period on the power play as Nyquist swept the puck in with a logjam in front for his sixth of the season.

The Blues, though, took the lead back just 61 seconds into the second period as Jackman's slap shot from the high slot made its way through a screen.

It was a 3-1 game just 1:20 later after Shattenkirk's slap shot on a power play from the top of the left circle went through a screen set up by David Backes in front.

Bouwmeester's shot from the left point was going wide of the net, but it hit off the leg of Detroit's Riley Sheahan at the right side and went in at 2:14 of the third for a 4-1 lead.

Halak stopped 10 shots in the third period to keep Detroit from getting back into the game.
