Jets hand Ducks first regulation home loss
Jan 22, 2014 - 6:51 AM Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Winnipeg Jets handed the Anaheim Ducks their first regulation loss at home this season.Evander Kane's goal in the second period proved to be the difference in the Jets' 3-2 victory over the Ducks.
Kane also had an assist in his return to the lineup after missing four games with a lacerated right hand, an injury suffered during a fight versus Tampa Bay on Jan. 7. Blake Wheeler and Andrew Ladd also lit the lamp for Winnipeg, which has won four in a row. Ondrej Pavelec stopped 40-of-42 shots.
"Every time you come to this building it's a tough building to play in," said Pavelec. "It feels good to beat them and be the first team this season. They're great. We battled hard. The penalty kill was key."
Cam Fowler and Nick Bonino scored for the Ducks, who fell to 20-1-2 at home this season. Jonas Hiller turned aside 8-of-11 shots before being replaced by Frederik Andersen, who made 10 saves.
"We threw a lot over the net tonight for some reason," said Anaheim forward Ryan Getzlaf. "We were being a little too fine with the puck tonight maybe. You're going to have nights like that. It's unfortunate the streak had to end like that."
The Ducks took a 1-0 lead on Fowler's power-play goal at 3:59 of the first period. Fowler's slap shot from the point was too much for Pavelec to handle.
Just 80 seconds later, Wheeler scored from the right circle to tie things up.
Ladd jammed home a rebound off Jacob Trouba's slap shot at 18:36 to give Winnipeg a 2-1 lead.
Kane ended Hiller's night with a shorthanded goal at 15:43 of the middle stanza. His shot from left circle got past Hiller.
The Ducks got within one on Bonino's goal at 10:18 of the third period. A Winnipeg turnover near center ice led to Bonino putting home a rebound.
Anaheim was unable to tie the game after pulling Andersen with less than a minute to play.
Game Notes
The Ducks were attempting to tie the 1978-79 New York Islanders for the second-longest home point streak to start a season (23). The 1979-80 Philadelphia Flyers own the record at 26 ... The Jets improved to 4-0-0 since coach Paul Maurice replaced the fired Claude Noel.
