Blues edge Islanders in shootout
Jan 25, 2014 - 11:26 PM Uniondale, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - T.J. Oshie tied the game at 19:33 of the third period and the St. Louis Blues caught a break when a New York Islanders goal was waived off in overtime Saturday. The Blues beat the Islanders 4-3 in a shootout, with Kevin Shattenkirk scoring the winner in the third round.
Thomas Vanek appeared to have the game-winner during a power play in overtime after the puck went off his left skate in the crease and slipped under Blues goaltender Jaroslav Halak.
But it was waived off upon review and Alexander Steen and Shattenkirk scored in the shootout to give St. Louis a 3-1-0 finish on its four-game road trip.
Vladimir Tarasenko had two goals for the Blues and Steen, who was questionable for the game because of a lower-body injury, got two assists.
Halak had 33 saves including three in overtime. The Blues have won three in a row over the Islanders and five of the last six meetings.
Vanek, Kyle Okposo and Matt Martin scored for the Islanders, who have lost two straight. Kevin Poulin gave up three goals on 35 shots and Vanek and Okposo also had one assist.
Shattenkirk, who was born about 40 minutes away in New Rochelle, N.Y., deked to his forehand and beat Poulin glove-side and under the crossbar to win the game.
"We did a great job on the bench of sticking with it," said Shattenkirk. "We didn't panic at the end and Oshie gets a goal to sent it to overtime and a shootout."
With about 3 1/2 minutes left in regulation, Oshie hit both posts on a shot from the left side and Brenden Morrow was unable to stuff in the rebound.
About three minutes later, Oshie scored the tying goal on a wrister from the slot after faking a slap shot.
The Islanders finished regulation on a power play after Jaden Schwartz was sent off for tripping Michael Grabner near the left boards in the neutral zone.
Steen gave Vanek a little shove in the crease as a loose puck drifted near his skate. Vanek and his leg were moving when the puck went off his blade and in.
It didn't appear that he kicked the puck in.
"To me it's just a terrible call," said Vanek. "I thought we played a solid game against a really good St. Louis team. It's just too bad."
Islander coach Jack Capuano said he thought the referees made the right call on the ice.
"It their decision (in the league office) in Toronto. They must have saw something conclusive to overturn it," he said.
Earlier, Vanek scored his 19th of the season on a slapshot from the right circle 4:01 into the game after the Blues turned the puck over behind their net. Okposo made it 2-0 at 15:11 of the period on a second-chance stuff at the post for his 22nd goal of the season.
The Blues got on the board with 2:43 remaining in the first when Tarasenko, despite being surrounded by three defenders, got off a snap shot from the slot to beat Poulin for his first goal of the game.
Tarasenko scored again 1:07 into the second period and Martin gave New York a 3-2 lead at 3:58.
