Ducks' Hiller pitches shutout at Dodger Stadium
Jan 26, 2014 - 7:48 AM Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jonas Hiller made 36 saves to backstop the NHL-best Anaheim Ducks to a 3-0 win over the slumping Los Angeles Kings at Dodger Stadium.Hiller pitched a shutout a la Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw in one of the unlikeliest of outdoor games. He was heavily tested in the first period, turning away 20 shots while Corey Perry and Matt Beleskey both scored.
Andrew Cogliano added an empty-net goal with 1:29 remaining in the third period.
The Ducks swept the home-and-home set with the Kings and have won 21 of their last 24 games.
Jonathan Quick stopped 18 shots in Los Angeles' fifth straight loss.
"Yeah, it was tough chasing the lead. Trouble scoring goals," said Kings head coach Darryl Sutter.
Anaheim got off to a fast start, striking twice before the first regular- season NHL game played in the United States west of the Mississippi River was 10 minutes old.
Following a faceoff in the Los Angeles zone, Ryan Getzlaf put a shot on net from the left circle that trickled through Quick. The puck sat in the crease and Perry was able to push it across the goal line at 2:45.
The Ducks went up 2-0 on a good cycle play at 8:12. Nick Bonino threw the puck out front and it floated past Quick after making contact with Beleskey.
Hiller denied Anze Kopitar on a penalty shot moments later to keep the Kings off the board.
After a scoreless second period, Los Angeles got an early power play in the third. Kyle Palmieri drove the crease and tumbled into Quick, who was none too pleased about the collision that resulted in a goalie interference penalty.
The Kings couldn't convert on the man advantage and finished 0-for-4 on the power play.
"I think halfway through the third I said it doesn't matter. They're not going to beat him," Anaheim head coach Bruce Boudreau said about Hiller.
