Scrivens stops 59 shots as Oilers blank Sharks
Jan 30, 2014 - 6:37 AM Edmonton, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Ben Scrivens stopped all 59 shots he faced to set an NHL record for saves in a regular-season shutout, as the Edmonton Oilers claimed a 3-0 win over the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday at Rexall Place.Making just his fourth start with Edmonton, the 27-year-old Scrivens snapped the record set by Mike Smith on Apr. 4, 2012, when he stopped 54 shots for the Phoenix Coyotes in a 2-0 win over Columbus.
"That's why you ride the bike, train and take care of your body," Scrivens said of facing so many shots.
Taylor Hall tallied a goal and two assists, Jordan Eberle added a goal and a helper, and Justin Schultz also lit the lamp for Edmonton, which has won three straight on the heels of a six-game slide.
"That's got to be one of the best performances by a goalie I've ever seen," Hall said of Scrivens. "You could tell he was feeling it in the first (period)."
Antti Niemi allowed three goals on 27 shots for the Sharks, who have dropped two straight.
Schultz gave Scrivens the only support he would need 10:51 into the first period, as his low shot from the right point slipped through a screen and past Niemi for a 1-0 lead.
Scrivens stopped 20 shots in the first and turned aside 22 more during a scoreless second stanza before the Oilers added two more goals in the third to create some breathing room.
Hall doubled Edmonton's edge just over six minutes into the final frame when he capped a 2-on-1 rush with a left circle wrister that made it 2-0 at 6:10.
San Jose's Dan Boyle went off for high sticking at 17:51 and Eberle buried a rebound from in front just under a minute into the man advantage to account for the final margin.
Scrivens stopped 17 shots over the final 20 minutes to finish off his sixth career shutout, fourth of the season, and first as an Oiler.
"Hats off to the goaltender," San Jose head coach Todd McLellan said of Scrivens. "In all my years in the league, I don't know if I've seen that so give him credit where credit's due."
