Weber scores twice as Predators top Devils in OT
Feb 1, 2014 - 5:35 AM Nashville, TN (SportsNetwork.com) - Shea Weber shook off a back injury to score a pair of goals, including the game-winner 1:29 into overtime, as the Nashville Predators rallied for an improbable 3-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils at Bridgestone Arena. After David Legwand forced extra time by tallying with just 10.8 seconds left in regulation, Weber -- a game-time decision coming into the contest -- converted on a 2-on-2 rush with Colin Wilson to give the Predators the two points.
Carter Hutton did his part as well by coming up with 24 saves, including a game-saving stop on a breakaway from Michael Ryder mere moments before Weber ended it.
"This was a real good win for the team," said Weber. "We found a way and battle hard. Tied it up and then we took our chance in overtime."
Patrik Elias and Jaromir Jagr each had a goal and an assist for New Jersey, which ended a 1-1-1 road trip on a down note. Cory Schneider finished with 30 saves in the loss.
"It's tough, two nights in a row, giving up a lead in the last minute," said Schneider in referencing Thursday's 3-2 overtime win at Dallas, during which the Stars tied the game with 51.5 seconds in regulation. "We should've had an extra point tonight again."
With Schneider leading the way with a near-flawless performance between the pipes, the Devils were on the verge of victory until a frantic attack with Hutton pulled resulted in Legwand's equalizer with little time to spare.
The Nashville forward was perfectly placed to the right side of the New Jersey net, and a long shot from teammate Roman Josi that was blocked in front came straight to Legwand, who promptly fired the puck into an open side to knot the score at 2-2.
Hutton kept it deadlocked by sticking out his right pad to stone Ryder in all alone with 1:20 elapsed in OT. Shortly after the subsequent faceoff, Wilson skated hard into the Devils' zone before dropping a pass to a trailing Weber, who ripped a wrister into the top right corner for the clincher.
Nashville owned a 1-0 lead at the end of a first period it mostly dominated, with Weber showing no ill effects from his recent injury by opening the scoring 6:45 in.
Schneider failed to clear a puck out of his own zone and it was stolen away by the Predators' Patric Hornqvist, who sent back a pass that Weber wound up and rocketed past the New Jersey netminder for his first goal of the night.
The Devils surged ahead in the second period behind two of their established veterans, with Elias and Jagr scoring nearly six minutes apart.
Elias' attempt while skating down the left wing bounced off Hutton's glove and over the line with seven minutes remaining in the session. He later got the puck to Jagr behind the Predators' net, and the 41-year-old sniper worked his way into the slot before spinning around and firing a shot between Hutton's pads 1:01 prior to the second intermission.
