Roussel, Stars down Coyotes

Feb 5, 2014 - 5:13 AM Glendale, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Antoine Roussel scored the winner early in the third period as the Dallas Stars took a 3-1 win over the Phoenix Coyotes on Tuesday.

Ryan Garbutt had a goal and an assist and Shawn Horcoff scored the other goal for the Stars, who have won their past two. Kari Lehtonen made 27 stops.

"We were trying to get a little too fancy there for a while," said Roussel. "That last period we just wanted to get some more chances on net and it worked for us."

Antoine Vermette scored the only goal of the game for the Coyotes, who had won two of three coming in. Mike Smith allowed two goals on 39 shots in the loss.

"We just didn't do the little things tonight and they did a real good job of putting us on our heels," said Phoenix head coach Dave Tippett. "There were some plays there where we had our chances, but we didn't get it done."

In the third with the score tied, Garbutt sent a pass from the right wing on the fly. It missed its intended target, but found Roussel and he wristed it home at 3:25.

Garbutt then sealed the win with an empty-netter in the final minute as Lehtonen made 10 saves in the final frame.

The first goal went to Phoenix, as Vermette took the puck in the neutral zone off a turnover, and on a partial break he slipped a backhand in at 9:18 of the middle stanza.

Dallas tied the game on the power play at 12:32 of the second as Tyler Seguin sent a pass from the left side to the front where Horcoff backhanded the puck in.
