Final
Sharks edge Blue Jackets
Feb 8, 2014 - 7:58 AM San Jose, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Tommy Wingels scored the eventual game- winner in the third period as San Jose took a 3-2 win over Columbus in the final game before the Olympic break for both teams.Patrick Marleau and John McCarthy also scored, while Antti Niemi made 19 stops for the Sharks, who won three of four heading into the Olympic break.
Ryan Johansen had a goal and an assist and Boone Jenner also scored for the Blue Jackets, who dropped their final two games before the break. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 43 shots in the loss.
The Sharks drew first blood at 3:23 of the first period as a scrum off a right circle faceoff saw James Sheppard throw the puck towards the net and it tipped off the stick of McCarthy and in.
"It's been a long time and it felt really good to get one," McCarthy said.
It was a 2-0 game five minutes later as Bobrovsky robbed Brent Burns down low, but the rebound went out to the left point where Scott Hannan drilled a shot that went in off the skate of Marleau.
The only goal of the second period went to Columbus just 18 seconds in as Johansen picked off a bad clear in the high slot and lasered in a wrister.
San Jose gave itself some room at 5:11 of the third when Jason Demers sent a shot on net from the right side that got behind Bobrovsky, with Wingels tapping it in as it sat at the goal line.
The goal proved fortunate as the Blue Jackets made it a one-goal game with 9:15 to play. Johansen grabbed the puck behind the San Jose net and sent a short pass to Nathan Horton, who then dropped it for a one-timer in the slot by Jenner.
"You know, that third goal hurt because instead of it being a one-shot game, it turns into a two-shot game," said Columbus head coach Todd Richards. "That's a very good team over there and you can't give them too many chances."
San Jose, though, was able to limit Columbus' offensive chances, as the team only allowed four shots in the final frame while throwing 18 on Bobrovsky in the period to hang on for the win.
