Avalanche kick off three-game road trip against Maple Leafs

Oct 18, 2006 - 2:36 PM Colorado (1-2-2) at Toronto (3-1-2) 7:30 pm EDT

TORONTO (Ticker) -- The Colorado Avalanche go into their first three-game road trip of the season without any momentum when they face the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday.

A 5-3 setback to the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday was the second straight loss for the Avalanche.

Defenseman Patrice Brisebois drew Colorado even at 3-3 early in the third period with a power-play goal, but goaltender Jose Theodore was beat by Martin Lapointe a little later in the session to break the tie.

Theodore, who is just 5-10-2 with three ties in 23 appearances - 20 starts - against Toronto, had 26 saves for Colorado, which went 2-for-6 on the power play.

Meanwhile, the Maple Leafs bounced back from an overtime loss to New Jersey last Thursday to post a 5-4 triumph in overtime against Calgary on Saturday.

Mats Sundin recorded his 500th career goal, putting a shorthanded shot past netminder Miikka Kiprusoff 50 seconds into the extra session. It was Sundin's eighth-career hat trick and 15th overtime goal - the most in NHL history.

Goalie Andrew Raycroft turned away 26 shots for Toronto, which outshot Calgary, 43-30, and seeks back-to-back wins for the first time this season.
