Final
Sharks down Devils
Mar 3, 2014 - 1:29 AM Newark, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Patrick Marleau had a goal and an assist as the San Jose Sharks took a 4-2 win over the New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center.Raffi Torres, Logan Couture and Matt Nieto also scored for the Sharks, who have won four of their last five games. Alex Stalock turned away 21 shots in the win.
Adam Henrique and Patrik Elias scored for the Devils, who had won their previous two. Cory Schneider allowed all four goals on 22 shots and had some nice things to say about Stalock afterward.
"He made some really nice scrambling saves," said Schneider. "As a goalie that's what you hope to do. That's usually the difference, one guys does and the other guy doesn't and tonight I wasn't that guy."
San Jose drew first blood when Couture banged in a rebound of a Marleau shot from the right side at 3:26 of the second period, but the Devils answered just over a minute later when Steve Bernier sent the puck from the right wing to the front of the net, where Henrique tipped it in.
The Devils then took a 2-1 lead at 14:22 of the second period after Jon Merrill's big blast from the left point was tipped in by Elias down low for his 13th of the year.
At 15:54 of the second, the Sharks tied the game off a nice play after Torres brought the puck in down the right wing on a 2-on-1 and fed it to his left for Joe Pavelski, who one-touched the puck back over to Torres for the easy slam.
San Jose took a 3-2 lead at 6:20 of the third after Stalock made a couple of big stops at his own end.
Play went the other way and Pavelski brought the puck in down the middle and slipped a backhand over to the right for Nieto, who shot it home for his seventh of the season.
"I had a couple of chances in the first period and wasn't able to elevate the puck," said Nieto. "We know ... that we need to get pucks high on this guy. So I shot it high and luckily it went by."
Marleau sealed the win with a wrister between the pads of Schneider with 2:25 to play.
