Senators rally to top Canucks in Heritage Classic
Mar 3, 2014 - 2:45 AM Vancouver, BC (SportsNetwork.com) - The Ottawa Senators scored four unanswered goals to beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-2 Sunday in the 2014 Heritage Classic at BC Place.Clarke MacArthur had a goal and an assist for the Senators, who snapped a two- game skid. Erik Karlsson, Cody Ceci and Colin Greening also lit the lamp.
Craig Anderson stopped 29-of-31 shots in the victory.
Jason Garrison and Zack Kassian scored for the Canucks, who have dropped two straight. Eddie Lack turned aside 24-of-27 shots.
"I thought Eddie looked -- some of the things going on around him before the game, during the game, I thought he looked not himself, honestly, but he made some big saves," said Canucks coach John Tortorella.
Vancouver forward Daniel Sedin exited early in the second period with a lower- body injury. Sedin was checked awkwardly into the boards by Ottawa defenseman Marc Methot and was holding his left leg before gingerly walking to the locker room.
The final outdoor contest this season felt more like an indoor game. The roof at BC Place, home of the CFL's BC Lions, was closed due to precipitation outside.
"We thought it was a great atmosphere. The venue was very well put together," said Senators coach Paul MacLean. "I thought the ice held up. The only guy saying the ice was bad was the coach because he wanted to not turn over the puck. I thought the ice held up very well, so it's a good job to Daniel Craig and his staff and to the NHL for putting on a great -- we were very proud to be a part of it, and obviously when you win a game like this, it's a big thing for our organization and our group, and I think we all really enjoyed it."
The Canucks scored less than five minutes into the game. While on the power play, Garrison's slap shot from the right point beat traffic in front and got past Anderson.
Kassian made it 2-0 at 11:27 when he carried the puck to the bottom of the right circle and put a wrist shot past Anderson.
Ottawa responded with two goals later in the first period. Eric Gryba's initial shot deflected off a skate and went to Erik Condra in the slot. MacArthur deflected Condra's shot past Lack at the 15:15 mark.
Karlsson carried the puck to the top of the right circle before beating Lack for a power-play goal at 17:03.
Ceci scored off a pass from Jason Spezza at 10:11 of the middle stanza to make it 3-2 Ottawa.
Greening put the game away with an empty-net goal at 18:27 of the third.
Anderson made 11 saves in the final stanza to secure the victory.
