Briere beats the clock for milestone goal, Avs nip Bruins

Oct 13, 2014 - 9:31 PM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Danny Briere scored with four-tenths of a second remaining in regulation, providing the Colorado Avalanche with a 2-1 decision over the Boston Bruins in a matinee contest from TD Garden.

Briere's 300th career tally came as the contest appeared to be heading for an extra session. He batted down a Jan Hejda point shot in front, and whipped a quick wrister by Niklas Svedberg just ahead of the buzzer.

"The work ethic was back. When you play that way, it's just a matter of time before you get rewarded," Briere said. "It's certainly a good feeling to find a loose puck like that late in the game and get a big win, especially after the start that we had."

Jamie McGinn provided the other tally for the Avalanche, who endured a scoreless string of 143 minutes, 28 seconds to start the season thanks to back-to-back shutout losses against Minnesota.

Reto Berra stopped 27-of-28 shots in his Colorado starting debut.

Loui Eriksson netted a power-play score for the Bruins, while Niklas Svedberg stopped 28 shots. Boston has scored four times in its first four games, losing three.

"He gave us exactly what we need from our backup goaltender, he gave us a chance to win," Bruins head coach Claude Julien said of his backup netminder.

Colorado appeared to take a 2-1 lead with 12:47 left in the contest on a fluke play. A shot from the right point by Tyson Barrie hit traffic in front, caromed off Ryan O'Reilly's stick then Dennis Everberg's right leg at the left side of the crease and trickled into the net.

However, after a lengthy review, the score was nullified as the puck was ruled to have been hit with a high stick by O'Reilly.

Following a scoreless opening period -- Colorado's seventh of the young season, the Avs picked up the first goal of the game and of their campaign on a shot from McGinn at 3:28 of the second.

Eriksson converted a backhander at the right post to tie the score on a Bruins' power play at the 7:50 mark.

Briere's first marker with Colorado followed 13 with Montreal last season, 124 with Philadelphia (2007-13), 92 for Buffalo (2002-07) and 70 with Phoenix (1997-2003) ... Avs forward Jarome Iginla made his return to Boston, and was held without a shot on goal in 17:17 of ice time ...
