Getzlaf, Ducks top Kings in shootout

Oct 23, 2006 - 1:20 AM LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Ryan Getzlaf ended a lengthy shootout with an impressive goal.

Getzlaf scored the game-winning tally in the fifth round of the bonus format after Dustin Penner tied the game late in the third period, helping the Anaheim Ducks erase a two-goal deficit in a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings.

With the score tied 1-1 in the shootout, Getzlaf used a drag move to flip the puck under the crossbar past a sprawling Mathieu Garon.

"For us to get one of these shootout wins was great," Getzlaf said. "Our goalie played outstanding tonight. We have had a few tough times this year, but I think that our goalie played very well tonight."

"This is the first one that we have won, so we did better today. Maybe our shooters are better today," said Ducks coach Randy Carlyle, whose team lost a pair of shootouts earlier this season. "It takes off the pressure when you get a 1-0 lead. We were fortunate enough to get it done."

The game was sent to the extra period by Penner, who unleashed a wrist shot off Garon's glove to tie the game at 2-2 with 5:50 remaining in the third period. After a review, the goal was allowed when it was determined the puck barely trickled over the goal line.

Rookie Ryan Shannon scored his first career goal two minutes into the second period and Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 29 saves for Anaheim, which improved to 12-2-9 all time against Los Angeles in overtimes and shootouts.

"(The shootout) sure is exciting for the fans," Giguere said. "I think it creates some excitement. It's not my favorite part of the game, but it's part of it now and we just got to deal with it."

Rookie Anze Kopitar assisted on both first-period goals for the Kings, who got 19 saves from Garon.

Defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky tallied when he caught Giguere out of position, taking the pass from Kopitar and burying a shot from the doorstep at the 3:55 mark of the opening session.

Michael Cammallieri, who leads the team with five goals, scored with 3:45 remaining in the first period to make it 2-0.

"We did not have a very good start to the game, but we got our legs underneath us and we played better as the game went on," Carlyle said.
