Getzlaf's late power-play goal lifts Ducks past Kings

Sep 16, 2007 - 5:26 AM LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- After emerging as a prime-time player during his team's championship run last season, Ryan Getzlaf is picking up right where he left off.

Getzlaf scored a power-play goal with 5:32 remaining in the third period, snapping a tie and leading the defending Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks to a 3-2 preseason victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday.

With Anaheim on the man advantage Getzlaf fired a shot past goaltender Jonathan Bernier from the left faceoff circle for his first tally of the preseason. During the Ducks' road to the Cup last season, Getzlaf led the club in scoring with 17 points in 21 playoff games.

Looking to avenge a 5-4 loss to the Kings in Thursday's preseason opener, the Ducks wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in this one, as Drew Miller scored just 70 seconds into the contest.

Los Angeles knotted the game with 5:50 to go in the first period. With Todd Bertuzzi in the penalty box for tripping, Mike Cammalleri netted a power-play goal to make it 1-1.

A second-round pick in 2001, the 25-year-old Cammalleri led the Kings in scoring last season with 80 points and finished second behind Alexander Frolov with 34 goals.

Acquired from Vancouver during the summer, Jason King restored Anaheim's lead at 9:09 of the second period with a shorthanded tally. It was the second goal of the preseason for King, who celebrated his 26th birthday on Friday.

Defenseman Tom Preissing, who signed with Los Angeles as a free agent in July after playing in the Stanley Cup Finals with Ottawa a month earlier, drew the Kings even just 27 seconds later with his first tally of the preseason.

With Jean-Sebastien Giguere recovering from hernia surgery and Ilya Bryzgalov getting the night off, Swiss netminder Jonas Hiller started and allowed two goals on 14 shots for the Ducks. Gerald Coleman replaced Hiller midway through the second period and stopped all 12 shots he faced.

Jason LaBarbera made 11 saves for the Kings before being replaced by top goaltending prospect Jonathan Bernier. The 11th overall pick in 2006, Bernier yielded two goals on 18 shots.

Signed to replace defenseman Scott Niedermayer in the event the Ducks' captain follows through with his plan to retire, Mathieu Schneider left the game in the second period with a sprained ankle.
