Stars score twice in 20 seconds, edge Blues
Sep 19, 2007 - 3:55 AM DALLAS (Ticker) -- Brenden Morrow scored an unassisted goal 36 seconds into the third period to help lead the Dallas Stars to a 6-5 preseason victory over the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday evening.Dallas rested Mike Modano, Sergi Zubov and Jere Lehtinen, who has an injured shoulder, while the Blues sat Keith Tkachuk.
The Stars capitalized on a two-man advantage to score twice within a 20-second span to tie the game 4-4 at 10:09 in the second period. Jeff Halpern tied the game when he pushed a loose puck from the top of the crease into the left corner of the goal. Mattias Norstrom scored over the shoulder of St. Louis goaltender Hannu Toivonen at 9:49 with a shot from the top of the right faceoff circle.
The Blues had scored three goals in the first seven minutes of the second period, two of which came on the power play, to take a 4-2 lead. Paul Kariya, who signed with the Blues as a free agent in the off-season, assisted on the first three St. Louis goals before adding a fourth assist late in the third period.
Matt Walker scored the final goal of the spree when he scored off of a slapshot from inside the blue line at 6:44. The Blues took a 3-2 lead after Lee Stempniak scored less than 90 seconds earlier at 5:13 as Kariya and Brad Boyes assisted on the goal. Karyia and Doug Weight assisted on Martin Rucinsky goal, as he poked a shot past Stars defenseman Phillipe Boucher to tie the game at 2-2 at 1:47 of the second period.
Dallas defenseman Stephane Robidas, who failed to score a goal during the 2006-2007 regular season, had an unassisted goal at 10:54 of the first period. Robidas fired a slap shot from the top of the right faceoff circle and into the left corner of the net, giving the Stars a 2-1 lead.
Junior Lessard scored the Stars first goal of the preseason with only 2:48 elapsed in the first period when he drilled a shot between the legs of Blues goaltender Jason Bacashihua from the top of the crease.
St. Louis quickly tied the game after Patrik Berglund placed a shot into the left corner of the net from the top right corner of the crease at 4:01 of the first period. Paul Kariya helped set up the score with a cross-ice pass from the top of the left faceoff circle.
