Stumpel leads Panthers past Flames in shootout

Sep 19, 2007 - 5:30 AM SASKATOON, Saskatchewan (Ticker) -- Josef Stumpel scored the lone goal in the shootout as the Florida Panthers edged the Calgary Flames, 3-2, on Tuesday night.

The Panthers backup goalie Tyler Plante, who relieved Tomas Vokoun in net halfway through the second period, gave his team a chance to win despite allowing a goal on the first shot he faced.

Grant Stevenson beat Plante at 11:05 in the second period to give the Flames a 2-1 lead.

The Flames didn't hold the lead for long as Martin Tuma tied the game at 2-2 90 seconds later when he scored on a slapshot from the point.

Plante gained his composure in the third period and in overtime, stopping several scoring chances, including a breakaway chance by Jerome Iginla to keep the game tied heading into the shootout.

The Panthers backup played like a starter, stopping all three shots he faced in the shootout, leaving the door open for Stumpel to score the game-winner as the final shooter.

Daymond Langkow opened the scoring for Calgary with 9:07 left to play in the first period. Marcus Nilson and Kristian Huselius picked up the assists as the Flames took a 1-0 lead.

Florida tied the score at 1-1 four minutes into the second period when Rostislav Olesz stole the puck at his blue line and beat Vokoun on a breakaway.
