Weekes, Doyle combine to blank Bruins

Sep 21, 2007 - 1:27 AM MANCHESTER, New Hampshire (Ticker) -- The New Jersey Devils can stifle opponents no matter who is in goal.

Kevin Weekes and Frank Doyle combined for a shutout and Barry Tallackson had a goal and an assist as the Devils posted a 3-0 victory over the Boston Bruins in a preseason contest at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Thursday.

The reigning Vezina Trophy winner, Martin Brodeur - who led the NHL with 12 shutouts last season - got the night off for New Jersey. Free-agent acquisition Weekes got the start and turned aside all 16 shots he faced over two periods before giving way to Doyle, who made eight saves in the third to preserve the blanking.

Tallackson, a second-round pick in 2002, set up Rod Pelley for the Devils' first goal midway through the second period. The 24-year-old native of North Dakota capped the scoring less than 10 minutes into the third, slipping the puck past goaltender Tuukka Rask for a power-play tally.

Karel Rachunek netted New Jersey's other goal - also with the man advantage - and fellow defenseman Johnny Oduya recorded two assists for the Devils.

Manny Fernandez made 14 saves for Boston before being replaced in the second period by Rask, who stopped 17 shots.
