Borer, Ward lead Hurricanes over Predators

RALEIGH, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Rookie defenseman Casey Borer had a goal and an assist and Cam Ward made 18 saves as the Carolina Hurricanes posted a 3-0 victory over the Nashville Predators in a preseason contest on Friday night.

Ray Whitney scored late in the third period and Scott Walker added an empty-net tally in the final minutes for the Hurricanes, who outshot the Predators, 24-18.

Borer started the scoring for Carolina at 5:13 of the second period. After receiving a pass Walker, Borer faked once before ripping a shot from the left point past Predators goalie Dan Ellis.

He also figured into the Hurricanes' second tally, assisting on Whitney's tally with 4:32 remaining in the final period that made it 2-0.

Ryan Bayda had a chance to give Carolina a two-goal advantage with 7:15 to go in the second period but could not bury a breakaway shot.

Ward, who sat out Sunday's opening preseason game, turned aside seven shots in the first period, six in the second and five in the third en route to the shutout.

Pekka Rinne made 12 saves for Nashville.

Defenseman Bret Hedican, Justin Williams, Eric Staal and did not play for the Hurricanes. Jason Arnott, Radek Bonk, Martin Gelinas and blue-liner Greg de Vries sat out for the Predators.
