Kubina gives Maple Leafs shootout win over Bruins

Sep 22, 2007 - 11:19 PM BOSTON (Ticker) -- After six rounds of futility, Pavel Kubina scored the lone goal of the shootout as the Toronto Maple Leafs edged the Boston Bruins, 4-3, in a preseason contest on Saturday.

Toronto's Scott Clemmensen and Boston's Tim Thomas kept the shootout scoreless through six rounds before Kubina finally broke through. The defenseman skated in on Thomas and moved to his right before putting a backhander past the goaltender to give the Maple Leafs the edge.

Petteri Nokelainen, a former first-round pick of the New York Islanders who was acquired in an offseason trade, was Boston's last chance. However, the 21-year-old Finn was unable to beat Clemmensen, ringing a shot off the goalpost.

Toronto grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first period on power-play goals by John Mitchell and Chad Kilger. But the Bruins answered in the second with man-advantage tallies by 2006 fifth-overall pick Phil Kessel and defenseman Bobby Allen.

Nate Thompson gave Boston its first lead during a power play at 6:09 of the third. The Bruins could not make it stand, however, as John Pohl tallied just 70 seconds later to forge a 3-3 tie.

Clemmensen finished with 22 saves for the Maple Leafs, while Thomas turned aside 33 shots for Boston.

Pohl and Kilger each added an assist and Nik Antropov set up a pair of goals for Toronto, which went 2-for-9 with the man advantage.

Kessel also recorded an assist for the Bruins, who were outshot, 36-25.
