Zubov's two goals propel Stars past Avalanche in overtime

DENVER (Ticker) - Sergei Zubov scored two power-play goals, including the overtime game-winner, to lift the Dallas Stars to a 5-4 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday night in a virtual dress rehearsal for next week's season opener.

Zubov blasted a slap shot from the top of the left circle past Avalanche goaltender Peter Budaj with 1:42 left in overtime to give the Stars the win.

The Russian defenseman also netted a goal in the second period to tie the score at 2-2.

John-Michael Liles scored a pair of power-play goals in the third period to give the Avalanche a 4-2 lead. He beat Mike Smith with a slap shot from the right point to give Colorado a 3-2 lead just 1:22 into the third period, then scored on a one-timer from the bottom of the right circle with 11:56 remaining.

Dallas answered with goals from Niklas Hagman and Brenden Morrow in a span of 55 seconds to tie the game at 4-4 with 8:04 to play.

Jordan Leopold gave Colorado a 2-1 lead with 8:09 remaining in the second period when he buried the rebound of Wojtek Wolski's shot from between the circles.

Budaj kept the Avs in the game with three big saves in the second period. He stopped Hagman's shorthanded effort from below the right circle early in the period and turned away Toby Petersen and Mike Modano in a span of one minute midway through the frame.

Dallas and Colorado traded power-play goals in the first period. Wolski put the Avalanche on the board first with a wrist shot from the left circle that eluded Mike Smith high on the stick side just inside the near post.

Modano tied the score just over four minutes later when he beat Budaj between the pads with a wrist shot from the right circle.

Jeff Halpern, Stu Barnes and Philippe Boucher did not dress for the Stars and starting goaltender Marty Turco did not play. Karlis Skrastins was the only regular not in the Colorado lineup.
