Souray, Roloson star as Oilers edge Flames

Sep 27, 2007 - 4:00 AM EDMONTON, Alberta (Ticker) -- Sheldon Souray was a major force on the power play for the Montreal Canadiens last season. Expecting the same, the Edmonton Oilers got a glimpse of his prowess Wednesday.

Souray scored a man-advantage goal late in the second period and Dwayne Roloson made 27 saves as the Oilers edged the Calgary Flames, 2-1, in a preseason version of the "Battle of Alberta."

Entering the 2006-07 campaign with 14 power-play tallies in 425 career games, Souray set an NHL record for defensemen by tallying 19 times with the man advantage for Montreal. Signed to a lucrative five-year, $27 million contract by Edmonton over the summer, he showed the club he still can be dangerous with the extra skater.

With the Oilers already ahead, 1-0, Souray one-timed Ales Hemsky's pass by goaltender Curtis McElhinney from the right point with 28 seconds to go in the second, doubling the team's advantage.

The tally proved crucial as Calgary blue-liner Adrian Aucoin blasted a shot from the right point that beat Roloson to the stick side at 7:47 of the third for a power-play goal, halving the deficit.

The Flames had a golden opportunity to pull even with just over seven minutes remaining, but Roloson was able to thwart Kristian Huselius' breakaway attempt.

Andrew Cogliano also scored for Edmonton, which improved to 5-1-0 in the preseason.

McElhinney made 19 saves for the Flames.
