Kariya makes Blues debut against Coyotes

GLENDALE, Arizona (Ticker) -- Paul Kariya makes his debut for the St. Louis Blues as they take on the Phoenix Coyotes on Thursday.

Keith Tkachuk, who was traded away to Atlanta last season, also returns to the Blues as St. Louis hopes to improve on a power play that ranked 29th in the league.

Veterans Bill Guerin, who led the club in goals, and Doug Weight, the team leader in points, look to provide the offense for goaltender Manny Legace.

Legace had a 2.59 goals-against average a season ago, which was the highest of his career. The 34-year-old, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in February, compiled a 23-15-5 record and looks to remain healthy in his second season as a starter with St. Louis.

Coach Wayne Gretzky and the Coyotes are hoping to improve on a last place finish in the Western Conference a season ago.

Phoenix allowed the most goals in the NHL last year and David Aebischer will most likely be the successor to Curtis Joseph between the pipes. However, Aebischer struggled a year ago, posting a 3.17 GAA in Montreal, winning just 13 of 27 starts.

The Coyotes had one 20-goal scorer last season in Shane Doan (27) and will be expecting added production from recent first-round picks Martin Hanzal and Peter Mueller. Of the players returning besides Doan, only Mike Zigomanis reached double digits in goals with 14.

Phoenix, which went 2-1-1 against St. Louis a year ago, limped to the end of the season with just four wins in their final 19 games.
