Sakic goes for milestone when Avalanche host Capitals

Oct 25, 2006 - 3:10 PM Washington (2-2-3) at Colorado (4-3-2) 9:00 pm EDT

DENVER (Ticker) -- Captain Joe Sakic and the Colorado Avalanche meet the Washington Capitals, who start a four-game road trip, on Wednesday.

Sakic had two assists in a 6-1 victory over Los Angeles on Monday. With those points, the 37-year-old Conn Smythe and Hart Trophy winner moved within a point of becoming the 11th player in league history to reach 1,500 in his career.

The chance of Sakic reaching the milestone is likely since he has 28 points in 33 career games vs. the Capitals.

Milan Hejduk scored two goals and defenseman Patrice Brisebois, rookie Paul Stastny and Wojtek Wolski added two assists for the Avalanche, who went 3-for-6 on the power play. Goaltender Peter Budaj made 27 saves for Colorado, which tallied five times in the second period.

The Capitals head into their trek with back-to-back losses following a 6-4 setback to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday. Alexander Ovechkin netted his fourth goal of the season and defenseman Brian Pothier added two assists.

This will be the first meeting between the teams since December of 2004, when Sakic had three points in a 4-1 triumph for Colorado.
