Blues look for third straight win against Avalanche

ST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- The St. Louis Blues seek their third straight win Friday when they host the Colorado Avalanche.

Coming off back-to-back wins against the Los Angeles Kings and Nashville Predators, the Blues are looking for their first 3-1-0 start since the 1997-98 campaign.

Paul Kariya has played a major part in St. Louis' early success. The 32-year-old left wing has five assists in the Blues' first three games - a good sign from a player who registered more than 50 assists in three of his last four seasons.

The veteran Kariya is trying to lead the Blues back to the playoffs for the first time in three seasons after they qualified for post-season play for the previous 25 seasons.

The Avalanche also are trying to return to the playoffs after missing the postseason last year for the first time since the team relocated from Quebec in 1993-94.

Colorado, which ended last season on a 15-2-2 run, routed the San Jose Sharks, 6-2, in its last game.

Paul Stastny scored a goal and added four assists against the Sharks, giving him four goals and four assists for the season.

So far, Stastny appears to have avoided the dreaded sophomore slump. As a rookie, he registered 28 goals and 50 assists.
