Pahlsson, Getzlaf carry Ducks past Red Wings
Oct 16, 2007 - 7:03 AM By Joel Bergman PA SportsTicker Contributing WriterANAHEIM, California (Ticker) - Samuel Pahlsson scored a shorthanded goal in the third period to help lift the Anaheim Ducks to a 6-3 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Monday.
Tied at 3-3 in the third period, Pahlsson took a pass from Rob Niedermayer flying down the center and put a wrist shot high past Detroit goaltender Dominik Hasek's glove with 10:58 left.
Anaheim found its missing offense Monday night, but squandered an impressive 3-1 lead before scoring on the Red Wings' power play.
Ryan Getzlaf recorded three assists for the Ducks, who defeated the Red Wings in the Western Conference finals last season en route to winning the Stanley Cup.
"All in all, I think that this was one of our better games," Ducks right wing Corey Perry said.
Hasek had to contend with traffic in front of the net all evening.
"There was always someone in my face," Hasek said. "There was some traffic in front, there were some deflections, they worked really hard in front of me. They scored two or three goals because there was someone screening me."
Ducks defenseman Kent Huskins got the scoring under way with his first career goal at 1:56 of the opening period. With the teams skating 4-on-4, Huskins took a cross-ice pass from Chris Kunitz from 30 feet out on the right boards and skated alone down the left side on Hasek. Huskins flicked a wrist shot from 10 feet out that bounced off Hasek's blocker and into the right side of the net.
"It started on a great play by Kunitz," Huskins said. "I didn't have too much time to think about, so that's probably a good thing. I was lucky to squeeze it through him."
The Red Wings tied the score at 1-1 on Dan Cleary's goal at the 6:39 mark. Both teams had a man in the penalty box when Cleary took the puck from Hasek just to the left of his net and skated down the left wing.
When he reached the top of the left circle, Cleary passed the puck to center Kris Draper in the right circle and charged hard to the net. Draper dumped the puck in front, where it bounced off Ducks defenseman Shane Hnidy and Cleary and rolled into the net.
Kunitz tallied his fourth goal of the season on a two-man advantage to give Anaheim a 2-1 lead at the 9:31 mark of the first. Defenseman Chris Pronger fired a slap shot from 40 feet out on the left point that Hasek stopped in front. The rebound came loose in the crease and Kunitz tapped it home.
"We had a little rough patch there in the second with the penalties, but I think collectively as a whole we played better defensively," said Kunitz, who recorded one goal and one assist. "They had a couple of power-play goals, but other than that we played really well and it's a good team builder for us."
Anaheim increased its lead to 3-1 at 5:14 of the second, when Andy McDonald notched his first goal of the season on a feed from defenseman Joe DiPenta. Getzlaf started the play with a pass from the right corner for his third assist of the night.
Detroit cut the deficit to 3-2 on a goal by left wing Henrik Zetterberg at 11:59 of the second. Zetterberg came in from the faceoff circle and put the sitting puck behind netminder Ilya Bryzgalov.
Less than two minutes later, Anaheim defenseman Sean O'Donnell was whistled for hooking and cross checking minors at 13:17. Kunitz followed him to the box 10 seconds later for slashing, giving the Red Wings a 5-on-3 advantage.
Detroit knotted the score at 3-3 on defenseman Brian Rafalski's second goal of the season at 13:36.
Standing in the right circle, Rafalski took a pass from Pavel Datsyuk and shot the puck through a scramble in front of the net and past Bryzgalov into the left corner.
"I got it from the D off the boards and took it, I tried to get it to (Tomas) Holstrom in front," Rafalski said. "It hit off a couple of guys and went in."
Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle praised the work of Bryzgalov, who stopped 32 of 35 shots.
"I thought our goaltender was probably our best player," Carlyle said. "We were challenged from our performance last night (a 2-0 loss to Minnesota) and the response was indicative of this group when their backs are against the wall."
