Flyers look to avoid sixth straight defeat vs. Thrashers
Oct 26, 2006 - 12:56 PM Atlanta (7-1-2) at Philadelphia (1-6-1) 7:00 pm EDTPHILADELPHIA (Ticker) - The new-look Philadelphia Flyers will try to snap a five-game losing streak Thursday when they host the first-place Atlanta Thrashers.
The Flyers have not played since Friday's 3-2 loss at Florida. Simon Gagne score both goals for the the Flyers, who have scored just seven goals during their losing streak. They last dropped five consecutive contests from March 28-April 4, 2002.
On Sunday, Philadelphia fired coach Ken Hitchcock and accepted the resignation of long-time general manager Bobby Clarke. Hitchcock had signed a contract through 2007-08, but the Flyers are off to their worst start in 17 years.
The job of ending the skid now falls to new coach John Stevens.
The Thrashers had a four-game winning streak end with a 5-4 overtime setback on Wednesday.
Superstar Ilya Kovalchuk earned Atlanta a point by scoring on a deflection with 11:39 remaining. Eric Boulton, Jon Sim and captain Scott Mellanby also scored in the defeat.
Kovalchuk struggled against Philadelphia last campaign, failing to register a point in three games.
