Jokinen chases points record as Panthers host Flyers

SUNRISE, Florida (Ticker) -- Olli Jokinen's pursuit of Scott Mellanby's franchise points record has hit a roadblock.

Jokinen aims to break Mellanby's record when the Florida Panthers host the red-hot Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday.

The 10-year veteran tied Mellanby at 354 points with a goal and two assists on October 13, but has since gone three games without a point. Prior to that three-game stretch, Jokinen tallied six points in his first five games.

He will look to finally eclipse the mark against the Flyers, who have won five straight and are off to their best start in five seasons.

Simon Gagne scored twice in Saturday's 3-2 overtime win over Carolina to help Philadelphia to its best mark since opening the season 9-1-2 in 2002-03.

Mike Richards also scored a goal in the win, extending his scoring streak to three games.

Meanwhile, Florida will need Jokinen to pick up his production if it is to avoid its first three-game skid of the season. The Panthers went 2-for-15 with the power play in Saturday's 4-1 loss to Ottawa.

Jokinen and his teammates have their work cut out for them, as Flyers goaltender Martin Biron has begun the season nearly unbeatable. Biron has started every game and has a 1.57 goals-against average, stopping a season-high 42 shots in the win over the Hurricanes.
