Stars' Modano one point shy of milestone

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Mike Modano is just one step away from history.

Modano attempts to become the all-time leading scorer among American-born players when the Dallas Stars host the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday.

The 37-year-old center tallied an assist on Monday against the San Jose Sharks, giving him 1,231 points in his career, one shy of Phil Housley's 1,232.

Modano was drafted first overall by the Minnesota North Stars in 1988 and has spent his entire career with the franchise. He has tallied 78 points in 87 games against the Blackhawks in his career.

The future Hall-of-Famer's assist could not save Dallas on Monday, as they allowed a 2-1 lead to slip away. San Jose rookie Devin Setoguchi scored two goals in the span of 2:34 in the third period to put the Sharks ahead, 3-2, and lead them to an eventual 4-2 win.

Chicago has lost three in a row and is coming off a 3-2 loss to lowly Atlanta on Saturday. The Blackhawks have momentum in the series however, due to a stunning 2-1 overtime victory on October 13.

In that contest, Dallas held a 1-0 lead until Robert Lang deflected in rookie Jonathan Toews' shot with 1.5 seconds left in regulation, taking advantage of a 5-on-3 advantage to force overtime. With the Blackhawks still on the power play at the start of overtime, Jason Williams buried a slap shot 43 seconds in to give his team the win.

Chicago has allowed 13 goals during its three game losing streak, and top netminder Nikolai Khabibulin is 3-5 overall with a 2.88 goals against average.
