Panthers look to get back on track vs. Hurricanes
Oct 31, 2007 - 2:03 PM Carolina (7-2-3) at Florida (4-7-0) 7:30 pm EDTSUNRISE, Florida (Ticker) -- After back-to-back losses, the Florida Panthers will try to get back on track when they host the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday.
The Panthers, who have lost four of their last five games, suffered a 4-3 loss to the Nashville Predators in the closing seconds of their game on Saturday. Predators forward Radek Bonk spoiled goalie Tomas Vokoun's return to Nashville, scoring the game-winning tally with 12.2 seconds remaining in regulation.
Vokoun, who was acquired by the Panthers from the Predators during the offseason, stopped 29 of 33 shots against his former team before giving up the late score. However, the 31-year-old netminder kept Florida in the game by helping to kill off seven penalties.
The penalty-kill unit wasn't the only squad clicking for the Panthers as they scored three power play goals against the Predators. Florida's power play unit has been a bright spot, as their 20.7 percent conversion rate is eighth in the NHL.
While this season has been a struggle for the Panthers, the Hurricanes appear to have regained the form that took them to the Stanley Cup Finals during the 2005-06 campaign.
After losing to the Montreal Canadiens on Friday, the Hurricanes rebounded with an 8-3 triumph over the New York Islanders on Saturday. Carolina won on the strength of three power play goals - two from captain Rod Brind'Amour.
Brind'Amour has gotten off to a hot start in this, his 19th NHL campaign. The 37-year-old center has six goals and 12 assists in 12 games this season after scoring 26 tallies with 56 helpers in 2006-07.
