Capitals look to end three-game losing streak

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- The Washington Capitals hope to snap a three-game losing streak Tuesday when they visit the Atlanta Thrashers.

The Capitals have been outscored 10-2 during their skid. They are coming off Monday's 5-0 setback against Carolina.

Washington, which defeated Atlanta in the season opener, is looking to avoid the basement as the two teams are tied for last place in the Southeast Division with 10 points apiece.

Washington is led by third-year phenom Alex Ovechkin, who leads the team with nine goals and 16 points.

Starting goaltender Olaf Kolzig was pulled in Monday night's contest against Carolina after giving up five goals on 24 shots. Tuesday marks the 30th appearance against the Thrashers for the veteran netminder, who is 13-10-2 with four ties against Atlanta all-time.

The Thrashers are coming off of a 6-4 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday.

The win was led by Russian winger Ilya Kovalchuk, who recorded his second straight hat trick. The 24-year-old leads the Thrashers with 12 goals and 19 points in 14 games. Kovalchuk has 10 points in his last four games.

Johan Hedberg has gone 4-4-0 with a 3.77 goals-against average since taking over for the injured Keri Lehtonen, who is out indefinitely with a groin injury. Atlanta ranks last in the league with a 4.07 GAA.

The Thrashers are returning home following a season-long seven-game road trip.
