Flyers hoping to end losing streak to Penguins

PITTSBURGH (Ticker) - Daniel Briere hopes to help the Philadelphia Flyers end an eight-game losing streak to the Pittsburgh Penguins when the Atlantic Division teams meet Wednesday.

The Flyers lost all eight meetings with their intrastate rival during the 2006-07 campaign, getting outscored by a lopsided 42-21.

Philadelphia, however, did not have Briere last season. Briere has already made a difference with his new club, tallying five goals and 15 points this season.

Briere and Mike Richards, who leads the team with eight goals, have helped the Flyers bounce back from an awful campaign, in which they registered a franchise-low 56 points.

The Penguins rely on Sidney Crosby, the reigning Hart Trophy winner. The 20-year-old captain has enjoyed success in his career against the Flyers, registering 14 goals, 16 assists and a plus-12 rating.

Crosby is among the NHL leaders with nine tallies and 22 points this season and has scored seven goals in his previous six contests. He also has registered a point in each game since being held scoreless in the season opener against the Carolina Hurricanes.

With Crosby on the ice, Flyers netminder Martin Biron will have to be at the top of his game.

Biron is among the league leaders with a .942 save percentage, but the Flyers relinquish an NHL-worst 34.5 shots per game. He has faced at least 38 shots in each of his last six games.
