Struggling Capitals visit Panthers for first time this season

SUNRISE, Florida (Ticker) - Teams in desperate need of a victory will square off Thursday when the Washington Capitals visit the Florida Panthers in the first matchup between the Southeast Division rivals this season.

The Capitals have lost five of their last six games, including a 5-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday. While Washington has struggled to put the puck in the net this year, averaging 2.35 goals, they boast one of the best wingers in the game in 22-year-old Alex Ovechkin, who comes into the game with 11 goals and 19 points in 17 games this season. He scored a goal in the loss to Tampa Bay on Saturday.

Florida comes into the contest on a four-game losing skid, having lost to the Atlanta Thrashers, 3-2, in overtime on Tuesday.

The Panthers have also struggled to put the puck in the net, averaging 2.47 goals. Center Olli Jokinen leads Florida in scoring with nine goals and 20 points in 19 games.
