York, Bryzgalov fuel Coyotes past Kings

Nov 22, 2007 - 5:52 AM GLENDALE, Arizona (Ticker) -- The bounces literally went the Phoenix Coyotes' way on Wednesday night.

Mike York scored twice and Ilya Bryzgalov made 27 saves in his second start for the Coyotes en route to a 4-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings.

"I feel mentally very good, physically too," Bryzgalov said. "I feel very comfortable with this team, with this young group of guys. I'm glad the Coyotes picked me up on waivers. This is a great team with a great future."

Phoenix coach Wayne Gretzky was pleased with what he saw of Bryzgalov.

"He's definitely a pretty good goaltender to say the least," Gretzky said. "He gives our team a good deal of confidence. Getting a guy of that caliber is a pretty good Thanksgiving gift."

Shane Doan had a goal and an assist, Niko Kapanen also had a goal and Ed Jovanovski added two assists for Phoenix, which defeated Los Angeles for the second time in as many games.

Matt Moulson scored the lone goal for the Kings, who lost their fifth game in a row.

"The fact that things are not going our way is something that we have to try and work hard on and get through," Kings coach Marc Crawford said. "Frustration is getting the better of us right now. You can see it."

Los Angeles is tied with Edmonton for last place in the Western Conference.

York opened the scoring - albeit in unconventional fashion - midway through the first period.

Zbynek Michalek's shot from the right wing bounced off York's midsection and behind Los Angeles goalie Jason LaBarbera.

The puck appeared to be rolling wide of the net before York reached back and tapped it into the open net.

"I think it was a matter of being in the right place at the right time - as much as anything," York said. "It came off me and I'm not sure if I even got a stick on it."

Moulson leveled the game at 15:07 of the period after his shot from left faceoff circle bounced off Bryzgalov's left pad and into the net for his third goal of the season.

York regained the lead for the Coyotes just 2:37 into the second period with his fourth goal of the season.

Jovanovski's shot from the point ricocheted hard off the end boards and onto York's stick at the right side of the crease.

Kapanen gave Phoenix a two-goal cushion after a Los Angeles defenseman couldn't control the puck in his own zone.

Daniel Carcillo chipped the puck into the air, Kapanen corralled it between the circles and slid the puck through Carcillo's legs past LaBarbera's extended right pad for his third goal of the year.

Doan capped the scoring at 10:49 of the third, taking a pass from Steve Reinprecht after the center stole the puck against the half-boards. He then faked LaBarbera to the ice before scoring his fifth goal of the season.

"That's hoping the goalie's going to slide one way and me putting it in," Doan said. LaBarbera made 30 saves in losing his sixth straight start.

"I'm at a loss for words," LaBarbera said. "It's frustrating. Really, really frustrating. We're not playing that bad. We're just not playing that great."
