Capitals' new coach makes debut vs. Flyers

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) - The Washington Capitals hope a coaching change will help turn around a miserable season.

The Capitals will kick off the Bruce Boudreau era when they visit the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday.

Mired in a five-game losing streak, Washington on Thursday fired coach Glen Hanlon. Boudreau, head coach of Washington's AHL affiliate, the Hershey Bears, has been named interim head coach.

The 52-year-old Boudreau becomes the 14th coach in Capitals' history, bringing with him a record of winning championships in the AHL. Boudreau led the Bears to the Eastern Conference championship and the Calder Cup in each of his first two seasons.

The Capitals won three games in four days to start the season, but have since won only three more in the last 45 days.

Last in the Eastern Conference, Washington has scored just 2.24 goals per game and only Alex Ovechkin has proved a reliable scorer. His 14 goals account for almost a third of the team's total.

Daniel Briere helped the Flyers avoid a three-game losing streak, recording a hat trick in the third period of Wednesday's 6-3 triumph over the Carolina Hurricanes. Briere leads the club with 14 assists and 24 points on the season.
