Horcoff helps Oilers down Ducks
Dec 1, 2007 - 6:27 AM EDMONTON, Alberta (Ticker) -- The Edmonton Oilers were happy to be back home Friday night.Shawn Horcoff scored a goal and set up two others and Dwayne Roloson made 21 saves to lead the Oilers to their third straight home win, a 5-1 triumph over the Anaheim Ducks.
After successfully killing four penalties in second half of the middle session, the Oilers scored two goals in the final minute of the period to take a 3-1 advantage and control of the contest.
"It was huge. Special teams are the way things are going right now," Roloson said. "If your power play is scoring and the PK is killing off the penalties, you're going to win, and our guys did a great job tonight."
Former Duck Dustin Penner's shot missed the net, but the puck bounced off the end boards and came to Horcoff in the left faceoff circle. Horcoff launched a quick slap shot past goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere to give Edmonton a 2-1 edge with 36 seconds left in the session.
"It comes off of the back board and lands right on his stick. It's one of those things, but those are the things that have been going against our club when we play like we did," Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said. "We didn't deserve the hockey game."
Kyle Brodziak doubled the lead just 25 seconds later. After taking a centering feed from Marty Reasoner, Brodziak stuffed in his fifth goal of the season to create a two-goal advantage with just 11 ticks remaining.
"After we killed off those penalties, we did a good job of getting the momentum and scoring right away," Brodziak said. "The guys thrive off that and got energy on the bench, and as soon as we killed them off, we came out hard."
Edmonton continued to pile on the offense early in the third period.
Defenseman Tom Gilbert completed a long pass to spring Andrew Cogliano on a breakaway. The rookie snapped a quick shot past Giguere on the stick side to give the Oilers a 4-1 bulge and end the netminder's night 93 seconds into the final session.
It was the second time this week in which Giguere was pulled. He finished with 19 saves.
Defenseman Steve Staios added an insurance goal at 6:49 against Jonas Hiller, who made 11 saves in less than 19 minutes of action. It was Staios' third tally of the season.
"Stevie made a great shot," Oilers coach Craig MacTavish said. "We haven't had a lot of goals like that all year long. Hopefully, that's a sign of things to come."
Edmonton, coming off a brutal performance in Colorado on Wednesday, began the game with energy and struck just 2:12 in while on the power play. After receiving a stretch pass from Jarret Stoll, Ales Hemsky executed a give-and-go with Horcoff and buried a shot past Giguere just before being hit.
Hemsky and teammate Geoff Sanderson left the game in the third period with knee and back injuries, respectively.
Ryan Getzlaf evened the contest at 7:03, when he directed the puck toward the net in an attempt to hit a streaking George Parros. But the puck deflected off Edmonton blue-liner Joni Pitkanen's skate and between the pads of Roloson for Getzlaf's 11th of the campaign.
"To win by four, that's the first time in a long time we've been able to catch a break in the third period," MacTavish said. "It was a nice change."
