Ovechkin, Capitals looking to continue strong December

Dec 20, 2007 - 1:29 PM
Montreal (16-12-5) at Washington (13-18-3) 7:00 pm EST

WASHINGTON (Ticker) - Don't look now, but the Washington Capitals are starting to build some momentum in December.

Alex Ovechkin looks to help the Capitals double their win total from the previous month when they host the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday.

After winning just three games during November, Washington has posted a 5-2-1 record so far this month. A major reason for the turnaround has been Ovechkin, who has seven goals and five assists over the past nine games.

The Russian standout leads the team with 24 goals - including three game-winners - and 39 points. He also has a league-high 195 shots.

The Canadiens are coming off a 3-2 loss to the Florida Panthers on Tuesday. Defenseman Andrei Markov scored two goals in the third period, but Montreal's comeback fell short.

Markov, who will celebrate his 29th birthday Thursday, has never scored a goal in 21 contests against the Capitals. The Russian is tied for the league lead among defenseman with eight goals.
