Jokinen, Panthers hope to keep rolling vs. Canadiens
Dec 28, 2007 - 1:02 PM Montreal (18-13-6) at Florida (18-16-3) 7:30 pm ESTSUNRISE, Florida (Ticker) - Don't look now, but the Florida Panthers are within striking distance of the top spot in the Southeast Division.
Captain Olli Jokinen will look to extend his six-game point streak and keep the Panthers rolling when they host the Montreal Canadiens on Friday.
Florida is 6-1-2 over its previous nine contests and has moved with two points of the division-leading Carolina Hurricanes, who host the Boston Bruins on Friday.
Jokinen managed just an assist Thursday, but Nathan Horton scored two tallies for his first multi-goal performance of the season as the Panthers cruised to a 5-3 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers.
The 29-year-old Jokinen leads the club with 19 goals and 38 points this season. The Finnish center has registered three tallies and four assists over his current six-game surge.
The Canadiens are playing their second game in Florida in as many days after earning a 5-2 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday.
Alexei Kovalev and defenseman Andrei Markov each scored a goal and set up another as Montreal ended a two-game skid. The Russian pair have both enjoyed stellar seasons, combining for 26 goals and 58 points.
Kovalev, who has 16 tallies and 17 assists, has taken his game to another level in this his 14th NHL season. Not only is the 34-year-old right wing the club's leading scorer, but he has not been held scoreless for more than two straight games this season.
