Sundin, Maple Leafs hope to stop slide

TORONTO (Ticker) - Captain Mats Sundin will try to help the Toronto Maple Leafs avoid a third consecutive loss when they host the New York Rangers on Saturday.

The Maple Leafs just concluded a six-game road trip with Thursday's 4-1 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers. The club lost five of six contests during their longest trip of the season.

Sundin, the club's leading scorer, managed just a goal and two assists over that stretch. The Swedish center has 17 tallies and 43 points with a plus-9 rating this season.

After making 12 straight starts before the Christmas break, Toronto netminder Vesa Toskala has sat out the past two games - both losses - nursing a groin injury. The 30-year-old netminder's status for Saturday's game is uncertain.

If Toskala is unable to go, Andrew Raycroft will likely make his third consecutive start, looking for his first win since November 9.

Captain Jaromir Jagr and the Rangers' offense finally started showing some life in the third period of Thursday's 4-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes. New York's 87 tallies ranks 29th in the league this season, but Jagr ended his 10-game goalless drought with his first two-goal game of the season.

Jagr has nine tallies and 20 assists on the campaign, while Scott Gomez also has nine goals and a team-leading 33 points.
