Red Wings face Coyotes looking to continue winning ways

GLENDALE, Arizona (Ticker) - The Phoenix Coyotes face the daunting task of stopping the Detroit Red Wings when the teams meet on Saturday.

The Red Wings own the best record in the NHL and have been on fire recently, winning 13 of their last 15 games - including a 4-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday.

Valtteri Filppula scored a pair of goals just over four minutes apart in the first period against the Avalanche to lead Detroit to its third straight win.

It was Filppula's second consecutive game with two tallies after he recorded the first multi-goal game of his career the day before during a 5-0 rout of the St. Louis Blues.

The third-year center from Finland has scored 13 goals this season - two better than his previous career high, set last season.

Filppula's recent offensive surge has come at the perfect time for the Red Wings, who are without their top two scorers. Henrik Zetterberg has been hampered by back spasms and Tomas Holmstrom missed his third consecutive game on Thursday with a knee injury.

After a four-game winning streak, the Coyotes suffered their second straight setback in a 3-2 loss to the Minnesota Wild on Thursday.

The Coyotes, who are ranked 22nd in penalty killing, allowed all three goals on the power play. Phoenix has allowed 31 power-play goals this season - tied for seventh most in the league.
