Devils hoping to get power play on track

NEWARK, New Jersey (Ticker) - The New Jersey Devils ended 2007 without a power-play goal in its last five games.

The Devils hope to reverse that trend when they host the Florida Panthers on Wednesday.

New Jersey's 5-2 road loss to the New York Islanders on Saturday ended a three-game losing streak, but the power play continued to struggle and is mired in an 0-for-20 slump.

"When you play a team you haven't beaten yet in your division this year, you'd think there would be more of a sense of desperation to want to play one of your better games," said Devils' coach Brent Sutter. "For 30 minutes, we were a very average hockey team. Then we woke up and played well the next 20 minutes. Then it looked like we never learned how to play defensive zone coverage before."

The Panthers have dropped two straight to fall back to .500, scoring only one goal in the two games. Derian Hatcher's goal at 9:14 of the third period gave Philadelphia a 1-0 road win over Florida on Sunday. The Panthers had beaten the Flyers five straight times.

Florida and New Jersey split a pair of games in Florida over a six-day span in October.
