Mason, Predators extend Flames' skid
Jan 16, 2008 - 4:48 AM By Jim Diamond PA SportsTicker Contributing WriterNASHVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Martin Erat, J.P. Dumont and Ville Koistinen scored goals and Chris Mason made 22 saves to lead the Nashville Predators to a 3-0 victory over the Calgary Flames on Tuesday night.
The Predators, who had lost their previous two games in shootouts, beat the Flames for the first time in three matchups this season.
The loss is Calgary's fourth in a row, with one of them coming in a shootout. Prior to the skid, the Flames had won five consecutive games.
"I'm concerned about the effort," Calgary coach Mike Keenan said. "If you were really fair in your evaluation tonight, Nashville outworked us for most of the game and that has nothing to do with the X's and O's of the game."
Mason posted his third shutout of the season and second in the last three games for Nashville, which scored twice in a 3 1/2-minute span in the second period.
"We wanted to play our game tonight, and not theirs," Nashville coach Barry Trotz said. "We had a lot of factors in our game going the right way."
The Flames' best chance to get on the scoreboard came at the 8:20 mark of the second period on a shorthanded 2-on-1. Mason gloved Craig Conroy's shot from the left circle off of a pass from Alex Tanguay to end the threat.
"I didn't want to commit too early on the 2-on-1, and I wanted to stay up," Mason said. "I saw it good and was able to get across and get my body in front of it."
After a scoreless first period, Erat scored the game's first goal at 11:34 of the second period.
On a delayed penalty to Calgary, Radek Bonk sent a backhand pass from the top of the left faceoff circle to the high slot. Erat skated into the pass and hammered a slap shot high to the glove side of Flames goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff.
"It was a perfect pass for my one-timer," Erat said. "I just tried to put it on the net and I am lucky that it went through."
Dumont doubled Nashville's lead with a goal at 15:03 of the second. After collecting the rebound of Jason Arnott's shot behind the Calgary net, Dumont's backhand wraparound shot deflected into the net off the inside of Kiprusoff's left leg.
"It was a quick backhand, and I threw the puck in front," Dumont said. "I think it pinballed a few times and went in I'll take it."
Dumont has recorded at least one point in nine consecutive games, one shy of the franchise record held by Steve Sullivan. Over the nine games, Dumont has seven goals and seven assists.
Koistinen's power-play goal at 59 seconds of the third ended Kiprusoff's night. He was replaced by Curtis McElhinney.
Despite winning the early-season matchup between the teams, the Flames have struggled to win here, winning just five of the 19 times they have played in the Music City.
"They played well, and we have to play better," Flames captain Jarome Iginla said. "They kept us from doing what we like to do and kept us out of their zone for a lot of it."
