Kobasew, Kessel, Chara help Bruins top Rangers
Jan 20, 2008 - 1:59 AM BOSTON (Ticker) -- Chuck Kobasew scored twice on the power play and Phil Kessel and captain Zdeno Chara tallied in the shootout as the Boston Bruins rallied for a 4-3 victory over the New York Rangers in the opener of a home-and-home series on Saturday.Tim Thomas made 25 saves, including a glove stop on Petr Prucha in the shootout to set the stage for Chara's winner.
Phil Kessel opened the second round of the bonus format by beating goaltender Henrik Lundqvist between the pads before Thomas stopped Prucha's wrist shot.
Chara then blasted a slap shot past Lundqvist, sealing the Bruins' second win in three games.
"I am not the best stickhandler, so I decided to shoot the puck," Chara said of his game-winning tally. "Sometimes you just have to keep it simple and shoot the puck."
"When you shoot that hard, it can be effective," Kobasew said of Chara's decision to unload from afar. "If I was a goalie, I wouldn't want to be standing there trying to guess where it's going."
Scott Gomez and captain Jaromir Jagr each had a goal and a pair of assists for New York, which hosts Boston on Sunday afternoon.
Rangers coach Tom Renney is looking forward to the quick turnaround.
"I think it should only help," Renney said. "I think both teams think they can take care of the other guy, and rightfully so. These are big points, naturally."
"We still took too many penalties," Jagr said. "I would have liked to take two (points) home, but one is better than nothing."
Kobasew knotted the game at 3-3 with his second tally just 82 seconds after Sean Avery had given the Rangers a lead at 8:08 of the third period.
Marco Sturm was denied by Lundqvist on a breakaway, and three subsequent shots also were stopped before Kobasew banged in a rebound 9 1/2 minutes into the session.
With the two tallies, Kobasew snapped a season-high eight-game goalless drought.
"You try to stay positive," Kobasew said. "When you get chances and they don't go in, sometimes it's frustrating. Whether you're scoring or not, you hope eventually they will go in."
In a back-and-forth game, Boston held a 2-1 lead entering the third period. But Jagr scored 3:27 into the session and Avery tallied less than five minutes later to put the Rangers in front.
Jagr scored his seventh goal in the last 12 games by beating Thomas on a wraparound attempt. Avery gave the Rangers a 3-2 edge by beating Thomas from the slot off a feed from Gomez.
Lundqvist stopped 36 shots for New York, which was 1-for-4 on the power play. He had won his first seven career meetings with Boston but has dropped a pair of shootout decisions this season.
"I try to approach it the same way every time, doesn't matter who's coming against me," said Lundqvist, who was beaten by Kessel in a 1-0 shootout loss on October 20. "I felt like we could have won this game before the end of the period, but the penalties just kill us."
