Capitals eyeing Southeast least

Jan 29, 2008 - 2:25 PM Washington (23-22-5) at Montreal (26-15-8) 7:30 pm EST

MONTREAL (Ticker) -- The Washington Capitals spent much of the first half of the season at the bottom of the Eastern Conference. Now that the All-Star Game has passed, they have a chance to grab the Southeast Division lead.

Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals will look to keep rolling Tuesday when they face the Montreal Canadiens in the opener of a home-and-home series. Washington enters just one point behind first-place Carolina in the Southeast Division.

Ovechkin, who had two goals in Sunday's midseason gala, leads the NHL with 39 goals this season.

The Russian left wing has been a major factor in the club's recent surge, notching 13 goals and 22 points over the previous 12 contests. Washington has been victorious in nine of those games.

The Canadiens also are on a bit of a hot streak and are looking to solidify their playoff position. Montreal has won four of its last five contests and now hold the second-best record in the conference.

Alexei Kovalev leads the club with 21 goals and 45 points this season.

The clubs will meet again in Washington on Thursday.
